A SERVICE helping mother and fathers with mental health problems has been launched to prevent a “tragedy”.
The treatment will help potential, expectant and new parents in Waltham Forest and three neighbouring boroughs.
It was launched by the North East London NHS Foundation Trust yesterday (April 1) in Waltham Forest and three other neighbouring boroughs.
The service will help parents during what is known as the perinatal period, which covers pregnancy and the first year of a baby’s life.
Perinatal consultant psychiatrist Dr Olivia Protti said: “Over the last 10 to 15 years, the perinatal period has become a more prominent area of need.
“Not receiving the right care in the perinatal period could lead to tragedy. By providing support early on there is a reduced risk of relapse and separation of mother and baby can be avoided.”
A large proportion of deaths of mothers or children have been found to be related to mental health problems.
New roles have been created as part of the initiative, including a midwife specialising in substance abuse and child protection.
