London mayor Boris Johnson stormed out while being questioned by MPs over the travel chaos during a period of heavy snowfall.

Mr Johnson told the Transport Select Committee that the problems in the capital in February were no worse than anywhere else in the UK.

He added that it was not “within my competence” to stop heavy snowfall and later walked out while giving an answer.

Committee chair Louise Ellman, Labour MP for Liverpool Riverside, said there was extreme concern that London was “virtually shut down in a way hat did not happen in any other city in the country”.

She accused Mr Johnson of “not acting in accordance” with his responsibilities.

The mayor hit back by saying Mrs Ellman's statement was "quite wrong" and accused her of “an unnecessary amount of party political bias”.

"He added: “To say that the situation in London was worse than anywhere else is simply not true.”

"The people responsible for transport in London, those getting the buses and Tubes out, actually did an outstanding job."

Mr Johnson said "huge effort” had been made to grit roads but said snow had fallen on the grit.

While being questioned by David Clelland, Labour MP for Tyne Bridge, the mayor said: "This is pathetic. You are trying to put the blame on a Tory mayor."
