THE police and district council are joining forces to help residents combat burglary.

April 7 is national Burglary Awareness Day and the district council's Safer Communities department will help the police give out advice to local people, which could prevent them from becoming victims of burglars.

Epping Forest Police Crime Reduction Officer Tony Ellis and the council's Safer Communities Officer Paul Gardener will be available to call at people's homes tomorrow to offer information about how to make their property more secure.

During the past week four houses have been broken into across the district, two in Waltham Abbey, one in Loughton and one in Buckhurst Hill.

A black Aston Martin Vantage was stolen from outside a house on Palmerston Road, Buckhurst Hill when thieves took the keys, which were left on a window sill, through the letter box.

Mr Ellis said: "Having your home broken into is one of the most distressing things families can experience.

"The thought of a stranger going through your personal belongings is particularly upsetting for many victims.

"Paul and I will endeavour to call on as many people as possible during the day to help them with their security.

"There are some basic steps that all residents can take which can prevent most offences or reduce loss."
