A PETITION calling on Redbridge Council to refuse Tesco an alcohol licence for its new shop in Wanstead has attracted more than 1,000 signatures.

The campaign, which was launched just two weeks ago, was set up after the supermarket giant submitted plans to sell booze seven days a week on the High Street between 6am and 11pm.

Campaigners hope that if Tesco is denied a licence it will "level the playing field" for independent businesses in the area, as well as combating binge-drinking and anti-social behaviour.

The council's Licensing Sub Committee are expected to make a decision on the issue at a hearing next Friday afternoon (April 24) at Ilford Town Hall.

Ashley Gunstock, one of the campaign's leaders, said he was delighted by the response from residents.

He added: "We are quite surprised at the strength of feeling, it's much more than we ever realised.

"People are concerned about the alcohol licence but it is the impact generally of Tesco which has people most worried.

"Tesco in Wanstead would make it very difficult for traders and consumers.

"We're going to aim for 1,500 signatures now and we hope to hand the petition over to the council next week.

"It depends how shrewd the council are whether they approve or deny the licence. If they're sensible they won't allow this to happen."

Redbridge Council have declined to comment on the specifics of the case but have stressed they consider every application on its merits.

A date is still to be set for the opening of the new store.
