EXCITED youngsters experienced life as a rookie firefighter as part of a charity initiative.

Woodford Green-based Haven Buddies enjoyed an exciting and extremely challenging day being treated as new recruits thanks to Dagenham Fire Station's Life Project.

After starting with a hearty, early morning breakfast at the fire station, the young people were kitted up in full protective gear.

They then spent the day learning hose running, ladder climbing, doing simulated tower block rescues and many other fire fighting activities.

Everyone went home feeling rather proud of their achievements and clutching various souvenirs including a large framed picture each.

Haven Buddies volunteers Doris Roper and minibus driver Bernie Arnold agreed that, despite their aching limbs, the day had been extremely successful.

Seventeen-year-old Kerryann Davis described the experience as "Brilliant” and added: “It’s the most exciting and best thing we've ever done.”

Haven Buddies provides a dedicated support to brothers and sisters of children who use Haven House Children's Hospice.

The Junior and Teenage groups meet regularly and enjoy a number of activities throughout the year.
