A FIREFIGHTER has urged people to buy detectors following the death of two people from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
A man and a woman, believed to be a middle-aged couple, died at a house in Matlock Road, Leyton, yesterday at around 10.55pm.
Charles Brown, red watch manager at Leyton Fire Station, said: "Their death is a complete tragedy. Carbon monoxide is completely undetectable. They were lying there unconscious when we got there. If they had carbon monoxide detectors there is a chance they might still be alive today."
He added: "This type of death seems to be more and more prevalent at the moment and I want to raise awareness about people buying carbon monoxide detectors."
Watch manager Brown said he believed the pair died as a result of the deadly gas escaping from a boiler or a faulty appliance.
Carbon monoxide detectors can be bought from DIY stores such as B&Q and Wickes.
Watch manager Brown said: "I would urge as many people as possible to get one. You can't detect carbon monoxide and it can be absolutely lethal."
