COUNCIL indifference towards a campaign for a crossing at a danger road has been condemned by the daughter of a crash victim.

Jennifer Sinclair’s mother Peggy Dorrington 85, of Wheelers Farm Gardens, North Weald, was struck by a Range Rover in North Weald High Road, just yards from where she had campaigned to have a crossing installed.

She died at St Margaret’s Hospital, Epping, two weeks later, and more than six years after her friend Albert Milne, 82, was knocked down and killed at almost the same spot.

Residents and shopkeepers have all united behind plans for a crossing at Bassett Parade, but the Parish Council has now become bogged down in discussion with Essex County Council which has maintained there are no imminent plans for extra measures.

Mrs Sinclair said: “I think it should be a priority before someone else is hurt. My mother was very nimble. She wasn’t slow by any means, and she was hit in the middle of the road.

“My mother was the second person to be killed over there. The other gentleman also died. There’s been two deaths from people being knocked down.

“There’s lot’s of children and mums down there. We are in our 60s and we found it difficult to cross there. Something should be done before someone else is hurt.”

Chairman of North Weald Parish Council Cyril Hawkins said: “We are still in discussions with the county council. It’s a pretty slow process with us all involved but it’s ongoing.

“We’d just love to see a crossing there for people who use the shops. We could all do with it. It just takes a long time.”

A 43-year-old man arrested at the time on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has now been released without charge.
