CAMPAIGNERS say a four-year battle to stop crashes at a notorious bollard has been vindicated, six months after the council were forced to introduce new safety measures at the site.
Households living by the junction of Chelmsford Road and Woodford New Road had long demanded Waltham Forest Council act, following more than 40 crashes at the blackspot in four years.
But now campaigners are claiming there has not been a single accident at the site ever since extra road markings and a keep left sign were added, along with the bollards themselves being painted white.
Vera Thomas, of Gascoigne Gardens, said: "The result has been a great success for us campaigners. We've been proved right.
"We are grateful to [Waltham Forest] council for what they have done, using 'in house' funds. The only sadness is that it took so long, and so much damage was done to so many vehicles in the meantime.
"Insurance claims mounted up, whiplash injuries and shock were suffered, and, as one car was overturned, there could have been a fatality. We are so grateful that is didn't happen."
