A GROUP of keen gardeners have planted a new kitchen garden at a Walthamstow community centre.
About 40 local residents took part during a one-day event at the Priory Court Community Centre, hosted by housing association Circle 33, and they are now calling for more people to get involved.
Working in partnership with Organic Lea, Growing Concerns and the Forest Recycling Project, the event gave residents an introduction to gardening and growing their own food.
They were taught how to grow flowers and vegetables as well as how to make the most of windows and balconies.
The kitchen garden features sweetcorn, salad, beans, courgettes and herbs at a new plot behind the community centre and will be maintained by centre users.
Resident and mother-of-four Jackie Bickmore said: “The kitchen garden is going to be great as it gives us the change to grow our own veg and save some money which is always good.”
Sussan Rassoulie, community development partnership manager for Circle 33, added: “The event was a great success and it was fun to watch residents discovering their talent for gardening and taking part in all the different activities."
Residents interested in helping to look after the kitchen garden, can call Sussan Rassoulie on 7447 3067 or email sussan.rassoulie@circleanglia.org.
