COUNCILLOR Terry Wheeler told last week’s community council that it was time to use the unused land around the town hall and that the council was having a masterplan drawn up.
I’m outraged, if not exactly surprised.
Yet again, Cllr Wheeler is pre-judging a consultation by declaring that the land is unused and ripe for development.
In fact, the council announced proposals to move the swimming pool and flog off the land before the consultation even started!
The land is, in my opinion, underused but valuable green space that could be much better used with a bit of clever design.
But Cllr Wheeler thinks he knows best.
Just like he did with the Arcade site, by dictating to consultants The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment and developer St Modwen that it must be home to a tower block.
With the Arcade plans now back to the drawing board for the fourth time, Cllr Wheeler has so much egg on his face that it’s amazing he can still find his way around the town hall.
Shouldn’t he stop scrambling to dictate developments and let the consultants do their job without being told what to conclude?
