BRITAIN'S first ever Chinese mayor has been elected to office in Redbridge.
Thomas Chan took up the role after receiving the unanimous backing of his colleagues at a full council meeting this evening (Thursday).
The Wanstead ward councillor - who was born in the former Portuguese colony of Macau - promised to follow the example of his predecessor Loraine Sladden and work hard to improve the lives of Redbridge youngsters during the coming year.
The father-of-two - who is the head of the Chinese Takeaway Association - announced that his two chosen charities will be the Redbridge Business Education Partnership and the Redbridge branch of the Alzeimers Society.
He said: "I hope my election as the first Chinese mayor is proof that we live in a country where all things are possible.
"Chinese people in Britain are recognised for their hard work and entrepeneurial talent but rarely stand for political office.
"I will work hard in the interests of all the people of Redbridge."
Snaresbrook ward councillor Sue Nolan, said she was confident her friend and colleague would excel in the position.
She said: "I know that Thomas will perform in this role with dignity and pride."
These views were backed by his fellow Wanstead ward councillor Michelle Dunn who thanked him for his support in the days following the death of their popular colleague Allan Burgess.
Fairlop ward councillor Brian Lambert was elected deputy mayor.
