THE achievements of Waltham Forest's adult learners have been recognised with an awards ceremony.

Held at Waltham Forest College, in Forest Road, Walthamstow, 12 students were nominated for awards and all received certificates at the campus's Mallinson Restaurant.

And Adult Learner of the Year winner Les Fewings, who is studying for an IMI Level 1 technical award in motorcycle studies, has overcome more than most to achieve his award.

Seriously injured in a motorcycle accident, he is now profoundly deaf and suffers from health challenges on a daily basis.

Chris Roper, curriculum manager for automotive technology said: “Despite his challenges Les has made marvellous progress on his course and deserves to be recognised in this way.

“He works hard, progresses well with his studies, and is a pleasure to teach. He is always polite and pleasant to both teaching and support staff, and to his fellow students.”

Mr Fewings, 52, of East Ham has been at the college since July 2008 and plans to return in September to pursue a level 2 qualification.

He also plans to begin repairing and selling old motorcycles, having already achievd a City and Guild qualification.

The awards were presented by principal Robin Jones, who added: “It was really hard to select the winner from the nominees as all students had worked exceptionally hard on their course in spite of having to deal with other issues such as health and maintaining a family.

“I believe all the award winners demonstrate that it is never too late to be what you want to be.”
