THE boundaries of the Leyton Lammas Lands have been marked out with a special ritual.

For the 16th year, the New Lammas Lands Defence Committee (NLLDC) led a procession across Leyton Marshes, marking the boundaries as they were in 1904.

About 40 people participated in the walk on May 17, which included the ancient tradition of 'pacifying the waters', offering a substitute for a human sacrifice.

Katy Andrews, vice chair of NLLDC, said: "This year, we were stressing the importance of urban green spaces in minimising the 'heat island effect' that is making cities worldwide up to 10 degrees hotter than the surrounding countryside."
