THOUSANDS of Walthamstow commuters are facing travel misery today as the Victoria Line is closed due to strike action.
Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers' Union (RMT) walked out for 24 hours at 9pm yesterday.
The union is demanding safety measures to prevent doors opening on the wrong side, but has also called for sacked train driver Carl Campbell, who was dismissed for allegedly not following safety procedures, to be reinstated.
Members are also calling for an "end to management misuse of attendance and disiplinary procedures."
Howard Collins, London Underground (LU) chief operating officer said: "This dispute is about the actions of one RMT member, a Victoria Line driver, who put passenger safety at risk and then compounded his error by failing to follow the correct safety procedures."
He added the dispute would not be solved with further strike action and that it would "inconvenience thousands of Londoners".
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has said he is "thoroughly disappointed" that the strike is taking place and believes the dispute could have been resolved through talks.
London Underground tickets are being accepted on bus services and London Overground trains.
