A LEYTONSTONE school has raised nearly £700 with a "great coin race".

Children at George Tomlinson School, in Vernon Road, raised the funds during the annual event to help pay for a "quiet area" to be installed in the playground.

Organised by the Friends of George Tomlinson, the children were encouraged to bring in as much loose change as they could and lay it out in lines in the playground.

Father-of-two Chris Noble, of the Friends of George Tomlinson, said: "We've raised enough money to create a quiet area with shade and planting and a place for pupils to play board games.

"We relied on a combination of pester power and looking down the backs of sofas."

The event saw a total of £689 raised, laid out in lines spanning more than 735m.
