THE controversy concerning the opening of a new shop continues as a second internet campaign is launched - but this time in its support.
International Supermarket, at the former Woolworths site in South Woodford's George Lane, welcomes its first customers on Monday despite a Facebook group protesting against it that boasts 1,615 members.
But now another page as been launched called 'International Supermarket - petition to keep it' for fans of the new shop and its diverse range of exotic produce.
Group creator Stew de Vere-Hunt writes: "Since some less than nice people have started a group to have South Woodford's newest business shut down before its opened due to small minded, pig ignorrant xenophobia, we have countered this with our own keep it group! Mmmmmmm ethnic food."
Despite only currently having 34 members, International Supermarket owner Mehmet Oztas believes this new group better reflects the true mood of the community.
He said: "We have lots of people supporting us on the street and asking us when we are going to be open. People can say what they want but I believe it's a free country and if you pay your taxes you can do what you like.
"I have lived around here for 20 years. We are going to sell stuff that you cannot get in Sainsbury's or Waitrose and everthing much cheaper."
And Mr Mehmet Oztas said he was very surprised that so many people chose to join the first group entitled 'International Supermarket - petition to remove'.
He said: "We have done a lot of business but have never had a reaction like this. These are crazy people who have too much time on their hands. I'm working all the time so can only check my messages once a week."
Deborah Murphy, manager of nearby Cafe of the Lane, said she did not see why people were so vehemently against the shop.
She said: "I think it's a good thing and I'm looking forward to being able to buy nice olives there.
"I think there's a touch of racism in the opposition against the store and I think it's quite worrying that so many people feel so passionately about it."
