A TELEVISION soap star visited a Leyton school to hand out prizes to pupils.
Derek Martin, who plays Charlie Slater in Eastenders, presented award to 20 pupils at Davis Lane school, in Vicarage Road.
The awards were given for the pupils' progress in different subjects, as well as for good attendance and punctuality.
Helen Stavrinou-Oakley, Davis School assistant headteacher, said: “The event was to celebrate the achievements of young people throughout the year.
“We kept it a secret that Mr Martin was coming, so it was a surprise.
“The pupils were very excited, they all watch Eastenders.”
Rashan Cummings, 13, won the student of the year award for his progress and commitment to the school.
The new Mayor of Waltham Forest Cllr Anna Mbachu also attended the prize-giving.
The school functions as a pupil referral unit, enrolling pupils who are at risk of being excluded from school.
