DESPITE a disastrous result for the government in the European elections, the Labour Party still won more votes than any other party in Waltham Forest.

Figures released today show the Labour Party received 13,204 votes while the Conservatives came second with 10,279.

The Liberal Democrats came in third ahead of the Green Party.

Green Party MEP Jean Lambert, a former teacher from Walthamstow, was elected for the third time and newcomer Steven Cheung, 19, of Highams Park took nearly 5,000 votes across London.

But independent Mr Cheung secured just 202 votes in his own borough, squarely beaten by fellow independent Jan Jananayagam, with 1,493.

The BNP also scored a comparatively high 2,552 votes, with UKIP receiving 5,529.

Waltham Forest's turnout stood at 32 per cent, just shy of the London turnout of 33 per cent.
