THE chairman of a group dedicated to promoting the use of Epping Forest has retired after four decades at the helm.

Ken Hoy grew up in Peel Road, South Woodford, where the garden of his house adjoined the forest which he quickly grew to love.

He went on to set up the Suntrap Field Study Centre, at High Beach, and has had a number of books published including On Nature’s Trail and Getting to Know Epping Forest.

He said: “I realise the forest has been important in my life since I was very young and I have been fortunate in having had the opportunity to spend most of my professional life as a teacher working in the forest.

“I’ve very much enjoyed the forty years I have been involved with the Friends and look forward to continuing to support their Committee led by their new Chairman.”

Judy Adams has been appointed as the group’s new chairman.

She said: “I look forward to playing my part in helping to ensure the Forest continues to be protected, enhanced and enjoyed by people for many years to come.”

The Friends of Epping Forest formed in the late sixties with the purpose of enhancing the forest’s reputation and encouraging an appreciation of its history.
