TWO Victorian houses in Walthamstow are to be restored to their former glory.

The houses, in Wingfield Road and Pembroke Road, have both undergone substantial changes over the years and the owners have been given council “historic buildings grants” to restore them.

Concrete roof tiles replaced original Welsh slates on the Wingfield Road house and the front door and windows were replaced with “inappropriate” alternatives.

Repairs are also needed for stonework and decorative timber at the front of the house, which have fallen into disrepair.

A report submitted to the council's planning committee said: “The current owner is very keen to restore the building back to as near its original condition and appearance as possible, starting with the replacement of the current windows with Victorian-style timber sashes.”

The total cost of the works is £10,040 and the owner has been given a grant of £2,008 to help with this.

The house in Pembroke Road will also have its windows restored to their original style at a cost of £7,498, with the help of a grant of £1,499.60 from the council.

Both houses were built in the late 19th century.

Historic buildings grants come from a budget of £18,100 set aside for "the sympathetic maintenance, repair and restoration of historic buildings".

They are limited to 20 per cent of repair costs with an upper limit of £5,000.
