YOUR recent local history piece ‘Are these the last days of a legendary ground (Guardian, May 21) gave the impression that the Leyton cricket ground would shortly no longer be in use. Nothing could be further from the truth.
This cricket ground, locked to the general public and barely used will become a playing field if plans for a new school go ahead.
Yes that’s right – a school with a green playing field. So rather than a cricket ground, very nice to look at but living in the past and hardly used, we will get a community green space open to all and used by all! Of course history is important, however things do change and in this case for the better.
I believe this to be a living and breathing borough – if we are to improve opportunities for outdoor sport and create a healthy school environment we need to stop being so conservative.
WG Grace is probably turning in his grave at the thought of denying our children the opportunity of honing their cricket skills on our green fields of England!
