EIGHT students have been commended for their selfless achievements in the latest round of Jack Petchey Awards at Redbridge College.

The awards, which were established in 1999, give grants to programmes and projects that benefit young people aged 11-25 years.

They are handed out to students at the College every month, with each winner receiving a certificate, medallion and a cheque for £200 to be spent on anything that will benefit their experience at College.

One of the winners, Junior Adams, who was nominated for being helpful to other students, has excelled in his studies and secured a place doing business at Greenwich University.

He said: “I plan to spend the money on a meal for my whole travel and tourism class, which will be a great way to end a fantastic year.

"I’ve really enjoyed my course and I think that you really do get out what you put into it.”

Anna Ward, who is studying hairdressing, was nominated for turning her life around and producing outstanding work.

She recently came third in the annual College Hair Show, highlighting the quality and professionalism of her work.

She said: “The College has helped me to achieve so much, and I want to thank my teachers and the staff at Evolution Hair & Beauty Salons [located at Redbridge College] for helping me to get this far.

“I’m going to spend the money on a class trip to see a show in London, so that the whole department can benefit and have some fun.”

The other winners were Naima Ali and Iqbal Mohammed Ghanzai (studying English for Speakers of Other Languages), Shahid Nazir (studying Blast), Daniel Micallef (hospitality), Leanne Russell (sport) and Dillon Coker (who studies travel and tourism).
