HEAVY rain caused flooding in Chingford yesterday.
Drivers had to be rescued by fire fighters after their cars became stuck in water several feet deep at the bottom of King’s Head Hill.
The Environment Agency issued a flood warning yesterday evening for the Chingford and Highams Park area after there was flooding in low lying land from the Ching Brook.
Sophie Porter, 19, was at her boyfriend’s ground floor flat in King’s Head Hill when they saw the flooding rise to just below the window.
She said: “It was quite bad. I’ve never seen anything like it. We were worried it was going to flood the flats.
“Firefighters were trying to help cars get out which had got stuck. A lot of cars were skidding and swerving as they came down the hill.
“It rose nearly three feet but started to go down when it stopped raining at about 8.30pm.”
The Environment Agency flood incident management team leader Lee James said their staff were out checking flood defences and clearing any debris to allow them to cope with the forecast heavy rainfall.
He said: "We want to remind people that any flood water can be dangerous, and they should not try to walk or drive through flood water.”
The flood warning for Ching Brook was lifted at about 11.30pm yesterday.
