THE police car which hit and killed an elderly pedestrian was travelling at an “acceptable” speed, according to a watchdog.
Brian Elton, 72, was hit and killed by a marked Vauxhall Astra on an emergency call in the Ridgeway, Chingford, shortly after 1pm on Saturday.
Mr Elton was taken by ambulance to the Royal London Hospital, in Whitechapel, but died four hours after the accident.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) was informed of the incident but it will not take further action.
An IPCC spokesman said: “The IPCC is satisfied that the police car had its lights and sirens activated and was travelling at an acceptable speed for a police car responding to an emergency.”
A post-mortem is expected to take place in the next few days.
The Met Police Directorate of Professional Standards is investigating.
