A DEPUTY mayor at City Hall has resigned following revelations that he paid for personal items on his corporate credit card.
Ian Clement, deputy mayor for government and external relations, ran up about £2,300 buying groceries and meals using his corporate credit card, which he later admitted was a mistake and re-paid in full.
But further revelations of Mr Clement's use of his corporate credit card when he was leader of Bexleyheath council forced him to quit his post this morning.
In his resignation letter to the Mayor London, Mr Clement said: “It has been a pleasure to work for you and I am sorry that I have let you down and deflected away from the excellent work you and indeed your team are doing in delivering for Londoners”.
In response, Mr Johnson said he was “extremely angry” at the liberties that were taken with the corporate credit card and said his position was now “untenable”.
Mr Johnson acknowledged that during his work at City Hall, Mr Clement had played a major part in extending the Freedom Pass for 24 hours across London, pioneering Open London and launching the City Charter.
