Tragically, kinfe and gun crime is never far from the front pages of our newspapers, and with fatalities on the increase it is sadly affecting more and more people every day.

But while the faces of victims are plastered across the evening headlines, what about those left behind?

In response to this worrying trend, four photography students from the University of East London have joined forces to present Them!, an exhibition which examines the anguish felt by victims’ parents through photography and the moving image.

Artist Ken Kamara, who grew up in Seven Sisters, says: “The premise is to generate awareness about gun and knife crime in the London area.

“We felt like we needed to make a stand and force people to come face to face with the harsh realities. It is easy to forget the parents who have to deal with the consequences day in day out and that is the real focus.”

Joined by a common bond of loss Ken chose to capture the parents in the same uniform manner, creating poignant and often moving results.

Other artists involved in the project are Priscilla Etienne, Sabine Grunke and Andre Laing.

Them! will be displayed at Stratford Circus, until Saturday June 28, 10am to 9pm daily.
