If you think walking on water only exists in biblical scriptures then think again. As part of this year’s Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF), French company Ilotopie will literally defy the laws of nature with the UK premiere of their spectacular outdoor production Fous de Bassin (Waterfools) at London’s Millwall Dock.
Staged on Thursday and Friday evening at 10pm, the mesmiring show takes you to a dreamlike water world where street lamps emerge from the depths, cars and caravans float past and a five-metre high aquatic queen on a penny farthing holds court.
Other highlights from this year’s four-day GDIF include an outdoor son et lumiere to mark the 250th anniversary of the death of Handel inspired by the Thames at the National Maritime Museum; an afternoon of the best of UK and international dance at Canary Wharf, including appearances from the Balley Boyz and Punkdrunk; and a unique performance which brings together the UK’s leading disabled theatre company Graeae and Australian sway pole virtuosos Strange Fruit in Greenwich.
This year marks the first of four annual festivals inspired by the elements, with 2009 themed around water.
GDIF runs from Thursday, June 25 until Sunday, June 28. All events are free. Details: 020 8305 1818 or www.festival.org
