OVERFLOWING rubbish at a popular green space has got people clamouring for extra bins and more frequent refuse collections.
As throngs of sunworshipers enjoy the hot weather it seems mountains of ice cream wrappers, fast food containers and drinks cartons are make life a misery for neighbours of Wanstead's Christchurch Green.
Greta Edwards, of nearby Greenstone Mews, told the Guardian that school children were among the worst offenders.
She said: "I was appalled by what I saw when crossing Christchurch Green.
"Not only were most of the few litter bins piled high with rubbish, but they were surrounded with rubbish, evidence that most people were willing to put their litter in the bins if only more bins were available.
"Since I came to live in Wanstead in 2003 I have not seen any signs of an attempt to deal with this problem.
"I talked to some of the men employed to remove the litter and because of their experience they had some very good ideas which should be considered.
"The bin should be re-designed, there should be more of them and where to put them should be carefully thought out."
New Wanstead ward councillor Alex Wilson also called for action to deal with the problem.
He said: "I definitely would support some more frequent collections as it's something that has been mentioned between my colleagues on the council."
A Redbridge Council spokeswoman said: "The council already collects rubbish from the waste bins and litter picks at Christchurch Green six times a week.
"While we have noticed that bins are overflowing, it is a very small site with plenty of waste bins however we have noticed a few bins are damaged and are in the process of being replaced.
"Residents have a responsibility to help the council keep Redbridge clean and we would ask visitors to the Green to think responsibly and either discard their rubbish in a waste bin or if it is full, to take their litter home."
