THOUSANDS of motorists could have their speeding fines repaid after a police admin 'error.'

Millions of pounds worth of penalty notices may have to be handed back to drivers after a national newspaper published claims that an office worker for Essex Police had been issuing the tickets without authorisation.

If proven, the error could affect all drivers who have contested speeding fines handed out by the force over the past four years.

Essex Police issue around 200,000 fines every year, with the notorious speed camera on the M11 near Woodford Green Athletics Club among the most prolific in the country.

Footballer Jermain Defoe could be one of the beneficiaries of the alleged mistake after his sentencing for two speeding offences in Chigwell was adjourned until July 10 while the issue is investigated.

Magistrates in Chelmsford found Defoe guilty at a hearing in May.
