AN EMPTY allotment site in Ilford could be turned into a new children’s play area under proposals currently being considered by Redbridge Council.
The site, in Vicarage Lane North, would need Government approval before any changes were made because it is protected by law.
The authority’s leisure scrutiny committee and council officers will now look into the proposed changes, which were suggested by the Vicarage Lane Play Park group, a coalition of residents living nearby.
They argue that a park could provide an outlet for youngsters, helping to prevent anti-social behaviour in the streets.
Cllr Alan Weinberg, cabinet member for leisure, said: “We will be carefully looking into this proposal because it is important for us to ensure that children in the borough have adequate play provision.
“However, we also need to bear in mind that there is a strict criteria in applying for change of use for an allotment site and we also need to consider the demand for allotments in the borough.”
A council spokeswoman added: "The council will explore the options including the feasibility of a mixed development to assess whether it would meet the criteria for the disposal of the site.
"Discussions will begin with Vicarage Lane Play Park group to consider the options in more detail."
