A HIGHAMS Park pensioner is to feature in a documentary made by deaf-blind charity Sense.

Edith Hayes, 96, who can barely see or hear, will be the focus of the film and has also taken part in a special photoshoot.

She was photographed by celebrity photographer Dave Hogan, of Getty Images, for an online gallery.

The film is one of five documentaries produced by the national charity and is aimed at raising awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by deaf-blind people.

Mrs Hayes said: “I can talk the hind legs off a donkey but don’t get much chance to do that – I spend many, many hours on my own.

“I feel a prisoner now and have outlived all my friends.

“I don’t want to get miserable. That’s why I’m happy that I have got such happy memories.”

Her sight and hearing are very limited and without her hearing aids, she can't hear at all.

Mrs Hayes said: “You really have to shout for me to hear, and I think it’s a terrible affliction.

“Also my sight is slowly fading entirely. It’s like a thick fog, but with my glasses, I’d say that I can see just a bit better through that fog.”

The film and gallery, which were commissioned as part of National Deafblind Awareness week, can be viewed at www.sense.org.uk.
