I am sitting in a cafe in Leyton, engaging in my latest reporter's surgery and testing out what it will be like to be a mobile journalist.
So far, despite the lack of people turning up to talk to me, it is working out all right. Although the reporters' surgeries are now no longer new, as we've been doing them for a few months, being fully mobile (i.e. no longer in the office at all) is brand spanking new, to the Guardian series anyway. This means I am doing everything I would be doing in the office, but on the move, armed with laptop and mobile phone.
The idea is that while we still have an office (over in Epping in the former Epping Forest Guardian offices) we don't just sit in it, phoning people all day long - we go out and find stories and meet people and get to know our patch.
A number of other papers around London are working under the same model and, despite inevitable teething problems (oh dear, I sound like an elected official) it has apparently generated noticeable improvements. While I can't deny I had some reservations at first, stemming mainly from my comparative inexperience, I do feel like it's going quite well. I just conducted an interview using my shiny new phone while sipping cappuccino and later I will be going to investigate a former public convenience allegedly being used as a prayer room in Leytonstone.
At any rate, the point I am making, good blogfans, is that the Guardian is changing - moving upwards, onwards and possibly sideways too. This means no more calling the office in Highams Park - we won't be there. If you've got a story, you can, of course, still share it with us, but we'll be able to come to you more easily and won't have to do everything at arm's length.
We'll also be operating based on patches in the borough and at the moment I am covering Leyton/Leytonstone. So if you a story related to either of those areas - call me! My new number is 07768 507 739 and I would be happy to hear from you.
Finally, I must confess I have discovered one small snag in that if I use the mobile too long, it does actually overheat and burn the side of my head...
UPDATE: Good grief! Somebody just phoned to say they were on their way to see me!
