BUILDING work on a department store in the £4bn Stratford City shopping complex has been completed.

Stratford City, to the north of the Olympic site near Leyton, will eventully have 5,000 new homes, a multiplex cinema and 1.6m square ft of shops.

Initial work on the John Lewis department store has now been completed.

Speaking at the site yesterday, Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "The success of Stratford City is critical to the success of London's 2012 legacy.

"Sitting at the heart of this brand new district in the capital, it will serve and link together the thriving communities that will be created in east London over the coming years."

John Lewis has promised that at least 250 of the 700 jobs in its store will go to long-term unemployed people living near the site.

The first section of the gigantic Stratford City complex, described by developer Westfield as a "new town", is due to open in 2011.
