POSTAL workers in London have begun a three -day strike over a jobs and pay dispute.
Delivery staff are striking today, distribution workers tomorrow and mail centre staff on Friday.
Dave Ward, Communication Workers' Union (CWU) deputy general secretary, said: "Strike action in London is in response to Royal Mail's continuing executive action of cuts without modernisation.
"There's no machinery, no redesigning of deliveries and no improvement on industrial relations.
"The company has abandoned the final phase of the 2007 Pay and Modernisation agreement and is set on piling more work and pressure on already stretched staff. "
The CWU has accused Royal Mail of "sulking" because the Government has halted privatisation plans.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail wants to discuss how to fully implement the agreement in London, as has already happened in units in the rest of the UK - the union refuses point blank to do so.
"Customers will not understand how the union can claim to support modernisation but then announce strike action to halt existing efforts to modernise Royal Mail in London."
