YOUNG sports stars from across the Borough are celebrating this week after finishing second in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games.

Redbridge went into the Finals Weekend on Saturday 4  and Sunday 5  July in a strong position, having already won gold in boys' karate, girls' squash and girls' cricket, along with silver in girls' karate and boys' cricket.

The success continued over the weekend with the Redbridge team winning gold medals in badminton and netball, and taking silver in the boys' Volleyball and girls' hockey on the Saturday.

They also picked up a bronze in archery and cycling, leaving the team in a second place position for Sunday.

Traditionally the weaker of the two days for the Redbridge team, the final day of the competition still produced some impressive performances.

The team scooped second place in indoor rowing, third in boys' hockey and fourth in tennis, leaving them only 17 points behind overall winners Havering.

Cllr Alan Weinberg, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in the London Youth Games including all those who took part, team managers, volunteers and coaches. 

“This result is a fantastic success for Redbridge and displays the wealth of talented young sports people we have in the Borough which is very promising in the build up to 2012 Olympic Games.”

The Redbridge team took part in 45 of the 49 events with over 700 young people from across the Borough participating. 

Overall, the team won five gold medals, five silver, three bronze and finished within the top ten in 29 of the sports entered.
