HORRIFIED residents of Honey Lane have spoken of the moment of the crash that left a teenage girl in hospital with serious head injuries.

Shortly before 9pm, a Black Mini Cooper hit a telegraph pole throwing the 17-year-old driver from the vehicle and under the wheels of a Nissan Micra.

Joanne Packwood, who lives directly opposite the site of the crash said: "I was watching TV and the children were in bed, I heard this almighty screech of brakes and then a bang.

"My first reaction was that a lorry had come and hit the cars parked outside, because it sounded like a concertina of sounds."

What residents were hearing was a telegraph pole, ripping down phone lines after it was struck by the Mini.

She continued: "I rushed out to help when I realised it was a crash, but I'm not very good with blood, so I conducted the traffic in my nightgown, while my neighbour who is a nurse went to help the girl."

"The girl was struggling to breathe. There was a young guy who got out of her passenger seat, he looked like he was in shock, he could barely speak."

"The car had spun around 360 degrees, and she'd actually gone through the rear passenger window of the car."

Mrs Packwood added that the incident had affected her so badly that she was now going to organise a campaign to have safety measures installed in the road.

She said: "I've lived here for seven years, and I've always said there's going to be an accident, people come down here at stupid speeds."

"My two children like going to play in the park across the road, and this has really brought it home to me, how quick it can happen."

"The council need to do something down here, I want a chicane, or a speed camera, we don't want anything like this to happen again."
