THE COLOURFUL history of one of Wanstead's most treasured wooded areas will be celebrated with a fun packed fair on Saturday.
Hundreds of visitors are expected to turn up for the Tarzy Wood Community Day in Wanstead High Street, which will boast a wide range of summer activities, food, information stalls and a steel band.
The free annual event was launched in 2003 and is held to commemorate the saving of the wood from property development more than 100 years ago.
The wood's 19th century owner had attempted to enclose it with a tar fence so that building work could begin, only to see the structure pulled down by angry Wanstead residents, determined to keep it open for public use.
Epping Forest keeper, Ian Greer, who helped organise the day said: "This is an important event in local history and we hope lots of people will come along and have a good time.
"This area is defined by its proximity to Epping Forest, so it was nice for people to be able to involve themselves in a celebration like this."
All money raised at the year’s event, which runs from 11am until 5pm will be donated to Haven House Children’s Hospice in Woodford Green.
