A PROTEST march against the formation of a school trust in Leyton is to be held tomorrow (Wednesday).
The march will take place following strike action at Norlington School as NUT members stage a second walk-out over the controversial plans.
Starting from Leyton Cricket Ground at 4pm, a number of campaign groups will join together to march towards Walthamstow Library and will gather signatures for a petition against trust status.
“We're marching down to Walthamstow Library and then to the town hall – we've cleared it with the police,” NUT secretary Rinalo Frezzato said.
The plans include forming a trust of Norlington School for Boys, in Norlington Road and George Mitchell School, in Farmer Road.
It has already been confirmed that George Mitchell and Beaumont Primary School will be amalgamated as of September to form a single “all-through” school.
The governing body of the trust is to be run by the Institute of Education and fears have been raised over the perceived lack of local authority control.
Union members and campaigners have said they believe the trust will not benefit pupils and will have a detrimental effect on the area.
There are also fears that the pay and conditions of teachers could be subject to change.
