WORK has begun on a multimillion pound scheme to redevelop Gants Hill town centre.
The £7.2 million project will involve extensive improvements to the roundabout and the area around it, including the installation of new seating, lighting, pedestrian crossings and cycle facilities.
Extra CCTV cameras will also be added as part of the scheme, which is being carried out by Transport for London (TfL) in partnership with Redbridge Council.
The move has been welcomed by local residents who have complained for years about the poor state of the roundabout’s underpasses and the safety of pedestrians in the area.
Preparatory work began at the site on Monday, with the project due to be completed by summer 2010.
No full road closures are planned, but traffic congestion is expected, with drivers advised to use alternative routes where possible.
Cllr Michelle Dunn, Cabinet member for Highways and the Environment, said: "The significant investment by TfL following major council investment in this area last year will assist the regeneration of Gants Hill and give the area a new look.
“The enhancements will help Redbridge achieve its dual aims to be a safer place to live and a better place for business.”
