CALLS have been made for "usless" road traffic signs to be torn down in Redbridge after the council admitted no-one is enforcing them.
Residents plagued by rat-runners in streets such as Chelmsford Road in South Woodford are furious that 'no access except for entry' regulations are not being upheld either by the police or council.
The demands come after Redbridge Council took over enforcement of minor moving traffic offences earlier this month from the Metropolitan Police.
The rules include those designed to ensure drivers obey one-way street signs, yellow-box junctions and no stopping zones outside schools.
The council is using CCTV cameras - including a mobile 'spy' car - to enforce the laws, but officers have admitted no access signs cannot be upheld using this method.
Cliff Woolnoth, of the council's Highways and Engineering department, said: "It can't be done by using CCTV coverage."
Resident Geoff Seeff, of Churchfields in South Woodford, said: "In that case the signs should be taken down. If you can't enforce them then why keep them up?"
