A MAN has been trying to scam money from vulnerable old ladies by pretending to have been mugged.
The man, described as scruffy looking and about 35-years-old, has approached people at their home and on Epping High Street asking for money to make a phone call.
Police are aware of the problem and want to take action against him but need more people to come forward with evidence.
The issue was bought up at Epping's first Neighbourhood Action Panel meeting, where four people attending had all been approached by the same man.
A woman from Epping said: “He told my friend he needed money to make a phone call so she gave him £2. It's very worrying.”
Another woman added: “I was stopped in the high street during the middle of the day and he asked me for money. It's something that can make people very nervy, especially if you live on your own.”
Neighbourhood Specialist Officer for Epping PC Gary Harrington said taking action against him would be a priority for police.
He added: “There's nothing to suggest that he has ever used any threats or violence towards anyone.
"We are looking to set up an ASBO against this gentleman but we do need anyone who has been approached by him to let us know.”
Anyone with information should call PC Harrington on 07779317211 or Epping Police Station on 0300 333 4444.
