(Wembley Cup)

TOTTENHAM followed up Friday's encouraging draw with European Champions Barcelona with a disappointing defeat to Celtic in the Wembley Cup yesterday.

A strong Spurs side conceded two first half goals and failed to recover as the Scots were crowned winners of the tournament.

Manager Harry Redknapp made five changes to the team that recorded a 1-1 draw with Barca, as Darren Bent came in to partner Robbie Keane in attack.

Tottenham found themselves chasing the game as early as the ninth minute. Paul Caddis scampered down the wing and crossed for Chris Killen, who made no mistake with the header from five yards.

Bent then forced a save from Lukasz Zaluska soon afterwards, before heading straight at the keeper from Wilson Palacios' centre.

The team's failure to take their chances were punished in the 41st minute, when former Manchester City striker Georgios Samaras turned Dorian Dervite and sprinted 30 yards before finishing smartly past Heurelho Gomes.

Friday's goal hero Jake Livermore entered the fray at the interval and he almost brought Spurs back into the game, but he shot straight at Zaluska.

Jermain Defoe then failed to connect properly with two balls into the box as Tottenham pushed for a goal.

But Celtic held firm and were able to claim their first trophy of the season.
