Waltham Abbey Gardens has been given prestigious Green Heritage site status for third year running, one of just 46 sites across England and Wales to get the top rating.

Judged by Keep Britain Tidy, the Abbey Gardens join the Gunpowder Mills site in being recognised as some of the best and cleanest parks the country has to offer.

The two green spaces, owned by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA) were judged on acessibility, cleanliness and maintenance.

The results were announced on Thursday 23 July at the official Green Flag awards ceremony held at the Pavilion Theatre in Bournemouth.

LVRPA Director of Leisure and Environment, Vivien Blacker said: “These retained awards are the result of a great deal of hard work from dedicated staff and the Authority’s commitment to providing visitors with a first-rate experience across all areas of the 10,000 acre Regional Park.”

The awarded sites will join LVRPA’s eight sites of special scientific interest.

The Green Flag Award is given on an annual basis and is the only national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales.
