WANSTEAD residents are being warned to be on their guard after homeowners were duped by a conman pretending to be from the 'water board'.
Two people living in Malford Court in The Drive, opened their doors to the man at the weekend.
In the first instance the thief, who was around 30 years old and spoke with a thick Irish accent, turned on the kitchen taps before demanding a £5 charge from the resident.
He got away with a £20 note before stealing a purse from another home.
Redbridge police are reminding residents that utility services never call unannounced, and are urging them not to allow anyone access to their homes without identification.
The bogus caller is described as a white male, around 5ft 10in.
He had short, dark hair and was wearing a shirt, trousers and a waistcoat.
