AN AIRFIELD could be used during the 2012 Olympic Games for park and ride, caravan and camping and passenger flights.

District councillors agreed at a meeting last night (July 27) that the proposals would bring in income for the area and are now considering implementing all three options.

Deputy Council Leader Chris Whitbread who is Chairman of the North Weald Airfield Strategy Cabinet Committee said: "London 2012 is a great business and cultural opportunity for the Epping Forest district. The airfield is a well located site with a good track record of hosting and holding events."

The council has been approached by the Caravan Club of Great Britain and asked whether their members could stay at North Weald airfield during the 2012 Games.

The site could be turned into a temporary camp site so members could easily visit the Olympic site at Stratford, especially if the park and ride scheme was put in place.

Cllr Whitbread said: "Epping Forest district has eight Central Line underground stations. However, people will need to get to the stations and the council is concerned about parking congestion if no extra local parking facilities are available.

"A well planned park and ride scheme would benefit everyone by smoothing the journey for visitors and reducing parking at the stations."

Aviation tenants have asked the council to look at temporary licensing the airfield for passenger flights to take some of the pressure off other airfields.
