THE AXE has fallen on two post offices in east London leaving the future of Wanstead and Woodford branches hanging in the balance.

Post Office Limited announced closures of branches in Leytonstone and Leyton but bosses are yet to make a final decision on the future of threatened stores in Aldersbrook Road and Woodford Bridge.

As part of a nationwide cost-cutting exercise, seven Redbridge branches were earmarked for closure, but the plans met fierce opposition from Wanstead and Woodford residents determined to preserve their local services.

Campaigns, supported by Ilford North MP Linda Perham and Wanstead and Leyton MP Harry Cohen, have been staged by residents whose post offices serve as a community lifeline.

A Post Office Ltd spokesman told the Guardian: "We are not yet in a position to make a final decision on Aldersbrook Road and Woodford Bridge post office branches.

"The proposals for these branches are being given further consideration and a final decision will be announced as soon as possible."

He added: "Of course no-one likes to see the branch nearest to them shut but even with these closures customers will still have reasonable access to alternative post office services customers value and trust.

"We remain satisfied that the remaining post office branches in the area are suitably located and offer the right services to meet the needs of the local community."

The decision by the Post Office Ltd follows a six week period of consultation during which the views of residents, councillors and MPs were taken into consideration.

Organiser for Redbridge Pensioners' Action Association Gus Krayer told the Guardian: "We feel very strongly indeed about this issue. It's a disaster threatening these post offices with closure at the same time as bringing in changes with pension collection.

"If you are unwell or handicapped it will be impossible to get to an alternative post office to pick up your benefit. Linda Perham has had the greatest sympathy with our campaign and has sent our letter to the relevant secretary of state."
