A ROW has blown up in Ongar after a construction firm named the streets and blocks of its new development while the town council was drawing up a list of its own.

The Ongar Station site will include several blocks of flats and affordable homes built by developer David Wilson homes.

It has decided to name them after London railway stations, but the town council want them named after prominent locals.

The registered names include: Victoria Road, Marylebone House, Waterloo House, Pimlico House and Islington House.

Ongar Town council wrote to them to suggest an alternative list- only to discover that the Post Office - who have to audit all new road names for developments had already given the go ahead.

A spokesman for the town council said: "We were disappointed to hear that the developer’s suggested names had been approved by the Post Office before what it understood to be a period of consultation had been completed.

"It has been said that because of this it may not be possible for the names suggested by the council to be used. Ongar Town Council has sought to pursue this matter and feels strongly that local opinion should be properly consulted and considered before any final decision is made."

The town council's suggestions were: - Buxton House - after the late Paul Buxton - ‘Buxton Trust’ and owner of the castle site and a well known supporter of Ongar interests.

- Hatfield, named after Dr Ted Hatfield - dedicated Ongar GP for many years and responsible for the construction of the Ongar scout hut in Love Lane.

- Byles, in honour of the late Ongar Rev Thomas Byles who went down in the Titanic and is commemorated in St Helen’s Church.

- Korf, after Miss Nellie Korf MBE, long-serving local organist for over 60 years and noted in the Guinness book of records.

-Burdett, (Edgar Spencer Burdett - noted musician and organist at St Martin's Church 1932-1944 and buried in Love Lane Cemetery).

-Boodle, after Edward Boodle - buried in St Martin's Church and founder of The Boodle Gentleman’s Club in 1792).

- Taylor after Ongar's Jane Taylor - author of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star).

- Slade (Marion Slade - dedicated member of OMEGA, Ongar’s amateur dramatic society.
