MORE trees are set to line the borough's streets after funding for a new planting project was granted by the Mayor of London.

Two neighbourhoods in Ilford have been earmarked for new saplings - which will be paid as part of Boris Johnson's efforts to make London a greener city.

Seven Kings and Goodmayes were picked out for extra planting by a panel of tree experts.

The aim of the project is to plant between 100 to 400 trees in 40 priority areas across London that would most benefit from extra planting.

A spokeswoman for Redbridge Council said: "The importance of street trees shouldn't be underestimated.

"As well as making streets look more attractive they offer a range of other benefits which include attracting wildlife, providing shade, reducing pollution and traffic noise and helping to improve air quality.

"If you live in Seven Kings or Goodmayes and want to register your interest in having a tree planted in your street or outside your house please ring or email Seble Kassa on: 8708 3571 or email: seble.kassa@redbridge.gov.uk before August 31."
