TWO ticks have been awarded to Waltham Forest College, a symbol which means it is positive about disability, according to Jobcentre Plus.
The college in Forest Road, Walthamstow, had to demonstrate through its policies, procedures and practices that it met five commitments regarding the recruitment, selection and retention of employees.
These were to:
- Interview all applicants with a disability who meet the job criteria and consider them on their abilities.
- Ensure there is a mechanism to discuss with dis-abled employees what can be done to ensure they use and develop their abilities.
- Help staff who develop a disability to remain in employment.
- Ensure all staff develop an appropriate level of disability awareness.
- Review the five commitments each year and do everything possible to make further improvements.
In order to keep the two ticks symbol, the college will be re-assessed from time to time by Jobcentre Plus.
The certificate will be displayed prominently in the main reception area and the symbol will now appear on college advertisements, headed notepaper and its website.
Kully Byatt, head of personnel, said: "Gaining this award will not make the college complacent, but will provide a sound foundation demonstrating that we are positive about disability.
"We will use this to reassure and motivate existing and potential employees and also members of the public."
