THAMES Water is helping the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) in its latest gull survey at Chingford and Walthamstow reservoirs.

Volunteers from the company monitored the numbers of various types of gull at King George V and William Gurling reservoirs, in Chingford, and the Walthamstow reservoirs, which are favourite roosting areas for the birds.

The BTO has been carrying out national surveys of winter gull roosts in Britain every decade since 1953, at all key inland and national roosting sites in the UK.

The gull count in the last survey, which took place in 1993, was 2.5 million.

Species of gull surveyed were the common gull, herring gull, great black-backed gull, lesser black-backed gull and black-headed gull.

Thames Water is also helping the BTO by providing £18,000 to sponsor the National Heron Census, which is the world's longest-running monitoring scheme for any bird species.
